The Gender Studies minor introduces
students to various ways that questions about women's and men's differing
participation in work, the family, political systems, and creative endeavors
have been asked and answered by different academic disciplines. This is
an interdisciplinary minor. Courses in the humanities and the social sciences
explore sex roles, sex differences, and the concepts of masculinity and
femininity; the roles of women in culture and society, past and present,
and their implications for the roles of men; questions about the distribution
of power, work, and resources in the public and private sectors; and the
symbolic representation of gender and identity in literature, religion,
and art. The minor is often chosen by students interested in investigating
materials previously neglected by scholars and in fresh perspectives on
traditional subject matter. Some expertise in Gender Studies has proven
to be an asset to both female and male students who have gone on to a
graduate school and to work in such fields as government and business,
social services and health agencies, the law, art and politics.
